The Presentation of Atlantis
Dear Baby,
Tell me what your name is.
Where are you from?
Are you from a realm full of water, do you soar with wings, are you from deep within the soil, do you work with fire?
“Tiene un nombre?” Does she have a name yet? People would say as they stroked my ripe belly.
“Not, yet.” I would reply with a smile “I think we are going to have to meet her first.”
Names are very important. They set the tone for the trajectory of a person’s life. That is why naming ceremonies are so important. Birth names are equally significant. On a practical level, being a multilingual family, we also wanted to choose a name that was fairly easy to say in all languages.
…
It is said that after Atlantis left this dimension some of its inhabitants remained here on earth. One party went to Peru and the other went to Mexico. They travelled by boat, of course. They travelled by sea, by rivers and eventually found the mountains in which they settled. They brought with them knowledge of their society and teachings as to how to live in harmony with nature, technology, and to be in cosmic alignment.
Our daughter’s name is Atlantis. Her name arrived in the middle of the night a few weeks before her birth. We were instructed that if we were to use that name, we would have to present her to her guardians, the Atlanteans.
The archeological sites through out these lands are temples. They were built as places of worship and prayer. And they are aligned like a map pointing directly above to different star formations.Yet, in the modern day we live in, they are rarely visited with this intention. Mostly because people don’t know what they are… and Wikipedia does a terrible job explaining what doesn’t fit into the scientific narrative. Therefore pyramids and sacred sites merely become cool backgrounds for photos on Instagram.
The exact whereabouts as to where Atlantis is located is argued by scholars in all four directions. I’m actually not sure if it matters. But, where the residents went afterwards does. We know that they influenced this continent in a profound way. So it was important to honour them for our presentation. We prepared our offering of tobacco, copal, obsidian and water and prepared our sacred instruments. We dressed Atlantis in a beautiful dress and told her where we were going.
The park on the way to the temple is lovely. It’s a nice walk through a cactus garden. There are four Atlantians at the top of the pyramid who stand stand as guardians of the temple. We presented Atlantis to them. We asked for their protection, for their support, and for their voice to speak to us, to her, to help us raise her in a good way.As we did our ceremony we could feel people taking pictures of us. It felt strange… but it didn’t matter. Our prayer was bigger than what the photographer could understand they were seeing.Eyes tearing, baby sleeping, and spirits flying, we lifted our baby into the four directions. They said yes. They would watch over her.
